It’s creeping up on that time of year again, and what better way to celebrate than anime awash with the red stuff. I can’t sing enough praises about grim, violent anime and my focus today is a title that only a few of you are likely to have heard of.

Twilight of the Dark Master was an anime released by Urban Vision in the west, and is another insane exercise in incomprehensible plot and stunning animation by Madhouse.



The beauty of this production is that it doesn’t matter what the hell is going on, it’s just plain scrumptious to watch. There’s blood, sex, bizarre technology, science gone horribly, horribly wrong and giant vaginas. It’s hard to find something comparable in modern anime, especially lately.

This was released on VHS and the dub is about on par with other dubs during the era, suffice to say it’s better than Violence Jack but not by much. If you can suffer through the horrid voice acting and the idea of a 45 minute film not actually having much of a story, you will find a lot to visually enjoy.

It also doesn’t hurt that the leading lady is very easy on the eyes.

While her story is probably the least interesting but most comprehensible, I was still thrilled by her character design and beauty, especially since this kind of black haired melancholy creature oozing with womanhood is hard to find under the deluge of saucer eyed little girls.

Needless to say, things don’t end well for her…or anyone else. This is grim, unforgiving and just perfect for the dark, mystic nihilist in all of us.

And for those who like their men hot, in leather and posessing supernatural powers with an uncanny ability to wear lipstick well, your needs have been served.

This anime is unfortunately only available on an extremely shitty DVD and slightly better VHS, so if you can find a copy, consider yourself lucky. It’s certainly worth a watch and if you liked Wicked City, you will love the hell out of this.

If nothing else, watch it for the Madhouse approved monster vagina.
